OTTAWA – An Iroquois-based property developer remains in jail six months after his arrest by the Ottawa Police Service December 6 2021.
Seventy-four year old Edouard Bonamie – who police allege used the aliases Nicholas Bonamy, Nicholas Grimaldi, and Nicholas Ives – faces eight charges relating to two yacht sales.
OPS allege that a US-based couple signed the sales contract and paid a deposit with a man in 2017, and never received the vessel.
Police also allege that three years later a man in Toronto contacted a broker about a vessel advertised online. The buyer signed a contract and paid for the vessel, and never received the boat. It was uncovered that the boat was never legally sold to the buyer.
Bonamie faces eight charges including two counts each of uttering forged documents, fraud over $5,000, laundering Canadian proceeds of crime, and possession of stolen property.
Since his arrest, Bonamie has spent more than six months behind bars and made more than 30 appearances in bail court. Details of those proceedings are subject to a Section 517 publication ban under the Criminal Code.
Bonamie is scheduled to appear again at the Ontario Court of Justice in Ottawa May 26.
At the time of his arrest, OPS said that Bonamie operates the South Dundas Waterfront Development Corporation. SDWC owns a model home on residential property on County Road 2 east of Iroquois, and also land at the corner of Dr. Stevens and Lakeshore Drives.
Bonamie pleaded guilty in 2006 to charges of fraud in Saskatchewan.
