MORRISBURG – A popular summer event is being cancelled for the second year in a row.
Morrisburg Canada Day festivities will not happen for 2021.
Keith Robinson of the event’s organizing committee said that the uncertainty of the government pandemic restrictions are making it tough for the committee to hold the event this year.
“We haven’t been able to fundraise for this,” Robinson said. “And if we could operate just the fireworks, it would be difficult.”
He explained that a drive-through fireworks display would be impossible because keeping everyone in their cars during the display would be hard.
Fundraising through its annual raffle pays for about half of the event, and provides seed money to start for the next year. The current government restrictions have not allowed the group to sell tickets as it normally would.
Robinson said that the July 1st event costs about $17,000 to operate, which includes bands, inflatable castles, the petting zoo, and the fireworks.
“It’s really disheartening because we know the community really enjoys the Canada Day event,” he said.
While this year’s event is not happening, Robinson said that the committee is in good shape to restart, hopefully for 2022.
