At council’s Tuesday, September 1, 2015, council meeting, CAO Shannon Geraghty, Manager of Public Works Chris Bazinet and Katherine Wells, communications coordinator, presented council with a recommendation that council authorize an application, under the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund, for the rehabilitation of Upper Canada Road.
In the Key Information Report dated May 5, 2015, the St. Lawrence Parks Commission divested itself of responsibility for this road, which now falls into the control of the South Dundas council.
Subsequent staff discussions determined that necessary repairs to the Upper Canada Road would be a good project to apply for under provincial and/or federal government funding. The Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund can provide up to 90 per cent of the total eligible costs: the amount of funding cannot exceed $2 million maximum provincial share.
Letters of support for this application have been received from MP Guy Lauzon, United Counties Warden, Eric Duncan, the Parks Commission, Cornwall and Counties Tourism and the SD&G Roads Department.
“It is our road,” said deputy mayor Jim Locke. “I support the motion (for the recommendation), but I am concerned about ‘owning’ this road.”
Councillor Mellan agreed. “It’s a lousy hand we’ve been dealt with this road, but it needs to be fixed and it’s now our road.”
The motion for authorization was carried.
