Off to Camp Banting with a little help from a lot of friends

Every night, three times a night since Hannah Warren of Morrisburg was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, Hannah’s mother Melanie has been getting up to test Hannah’s blood sugar levels.

Next week, Hannah will be at camp, and her mother will be sleeping through the night, knowing that even though Hannah is away, she will be getting the best of care at Camp Banting, a summer camp for children living with Type 1 diabetes.

Staffed by CHEO doctors and nurses, with camp councillors who all have diabetes, or family with diabetes, Melanie looks forward to this opportunity for her daughter Hannah.

“Not only will it give me a break, it will let Hannah know that she is not alone in this ocean that is diabetes,” says Melanie. “There at Camp Banting, the people who aren’t testing their blood are the odd balls.”

Camp Banting is expensive, but Melanie’s friends immediately started to fundraise to ensure that Hannah could go to camp this year.

“It’s a great opportunity for Hannah. She’s never been away before, so we had to do everything we could to make this happen,” said Karen Irven.

“I know she will have a great time, and her mother can have some peace of mind knowing that she will have the best of care while she’s away.”

The Hannah’s Helpers fundraising effort exceeded expectations so much so, that there are enough funds available for Hannah to go to camp again next year, if she likes it this year.

Like any other kid, Hannah is a little nervous about attending camp, but has been excitedly researching all that the camp has to offer. Of what she has learned through her research, she is most looking forward to the rope bridges and archery.

“To everyone who has come together to help us with this, we are very thankful,” says Melanie.
