Dogs Looking for Loving Homes

Close to 50 Winchester District Memorial Hospital (WDMH) staff members and physicians took over the front lobby and the upper balcony at noon on April 3 for an impromptu flash mob to celebrate National Nursing Oncology Day.

Led by chemotherapy nurse Stephanie Ouellette, the group danced to ‘Firework’ decked out in orange and cranberry outfits, the colours of the Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology.

“WDMH is proud of its oncology nurses who provide specialized care to cancer patients in the region,” notes Cholly Boland, CEO. “In fact, all of WDMH’s chemotherapy nurses are certified through the de Souza Institute e-learning centre and are recognized for their advanced cancer care nursing knowledge and skills.”

Oncology nurses all over Canada raised awareness by doing the same flash mob dance to the same music at the same time in public spaces across Canada. At the end of the event, staff observed a moment of silence in remembrance of past oncology patients.

Upper Canada Village is opening its doors to Siloam Entertainment from September 10th to the 14th.

Brian Lutes, writer, director and actor, needs 150 to 200 extras for  his movie, Percy Harris.

According to Lutes, the movie, a period western, “is a film about a confederate soldier apprehended while returning home from the war and is convicted of a crime he didn’t commit. He’s sentenced to hang.”

“With several twists and turns (sort of a combination of Wizard of Oz meets Rambo), we follow Percy on his quest for freedom, struggling against bounty hunters, brutal terrain and a legion of inner demons.”

So, what about those extras?

Lutes predicts that the biggest number of extras will be needed on Sunday the 11th and Monday the 12th. Shooting happens between 8:00 and 5:30.

“Unfortunately, wardrobe is in limited supply with that many extras… So, we’re asking people to go through their closets and bring the most “period” friendly clothing they have.”

“They could dress as a farmer, cowboy, or townspeople.”

The first annual Riverside Heights Winter Carnival continued its second weekend of activities with a “3 on 3 hockey tournament” on February 11th at the George Jowett Recreation Hall.

While the planned toboggan races and snowman building contest were a bust thanks to uncooperative weather, the breakfast, hockey and supper events went forward as planned.

The hockey tournament had four teams of three. These hearty hockey lovers braved the freezing temperatures and had lots of fun doing it.

Each player contributed $20 to join the tournament, which included a Saturday morning breakfast. Jamie Robinson and Joey Dufresne, organizers of the event, have earmarked the money raised from the event to help a local resident in need.
