Nattily dressed suspect, Miller Bannister, also known as Lion Brian Speer, isn’t sure whether he’s holding a priceless relic, a murder weapon, or a red herring. However he’ll certainly find out, maybe the hard way, when the Iroquois-Matilda Lions present Monday Always Leads to Murder at Upper Canada Playhouse April 26-28. The cast of 10, with construction and technical crews hard at work behind the scenes, is in final rehearsals for the big show. The comic murder mystery, set in New York in 1939, will leave you laughing as you try to figure out what gorgeous dolls, tough cops, suspicious custodians, an ancient curse and a dead body or two have to do with the fun. Your guess will probably be as good as scruffy private detective Harry Monday’s. Tickets for the Lions production, four performances only, are going fast. Pick yours up at the Playhouse, Mustard’s Variety or from Lion Albert DeJong, 613-652-4588.

Thousand Islanders hold workshop at the McIntosh Inn

The Thousands Islanders, a vibrant a cappella chorus, centred in Brockville, held two days of dynamic vocal workshops in facilities arranged at the McIntosh Inn and Conference Centre in Morrisburg, April 17-18. Flown in as guest instructor was Steve Scott. Scott, a noted American voice and musical coach, is a graduate teaching assistant at the University of Kansas, and currently working on his Phd. in vocal pedagogy. The Islanders choir, led by director Stuart McMartin, front row left, includes two South Dundas residents, Wendy Gibb, second row, right end, and Karen Koivumaki, second row, third from the right. The choir is currently in final rehearsals for the 2015 Area Contest and Convention held in Alliston on May 23. At this event, choirs from all over Ontario will compete for musical gold. Instructor Scott, who worked extensively over two days with the choir, quartettes and individual singers, feels that “people are natural born musicians: to be human is to be a musician. I have the opportunity to coach and encourage that unique inner singer.”

Golden Gears executive takes office

At the February 29 meeting of the Golden Gears Car Club, an election was held to install the officers and directors of the newly revived car lovers organization. Deputy mayor of South Dundas, Jim Locke, was on hand to swear in the duly elected board and to outline for all club members the duties associated with each position. From the left are Jim Locke, Brian Erratt, 1st vice president, Henry Swank, president, Jim Millard, secretary, Ken Hasson, treasurer, Wayne Barkley, past president, Stephane Aube, director, Jeff Beaupre, membership chairman and Garry Tracey, director. Absent from the photo is Gaby Swank, public relations and communications chair person. The next general Meeting of the Golden Gears is Thursday, March 29, at 7:30 p.m. at the Iroquois Legion. New members are very welcome.
