Great Record, Great Win…Novice B Lions win UCMHL Championship

The Morrisburg Junior B Lions will end their season with a home and home series against the Akwesasne Wolves this weekend. Sunday, will be their final home game for the 2014-15 season when they will entertain the Wolves in a match that will start at 2:30 p.m.

This past week, the Lions travelled to Casselman where they were handed an 8-2 loss by the first place Vikings, and then on Saturday night, they took it to a shoot out before they gave up the loss to the hosting Char-Lan Rebels, 3-2.

Saturday night at the Char-Lan Rec Centre, it was a good, close game that ended in a two-goal draw to force overtime and eventually a shoot out.

After a scoreless first period, David Poirier put the Rebels on the scoreboard on their power play.

At 12:48 of the second, Curtis Evans (from Jacob Guilliot and Ryan Griffin) tied the game 1-1.

Brennan Markell made it 2-1, Rebels at 18:06, and that’s the way it stayed until early in the third period.

This time it was the Lions power play that got the results at 3:19 of the frame.

Jacob Kendrick and Jordan Smail provided the setup for a Michael Paquette goal which tied the game 2-2.

It stayed that way to force the overtime during which, neither the Lions Keiran Weir nor the Rebels Kevan Dumouchel would give anything more up to force the decision to the shoot out.

Selected to shoot for the Lions were Paquette, Jacob Kendrick and Alex Sifton and getting the nod for the Rebels were Brennan Markell, Matthew Gregoire and Quintin MacDonnell.

 Kendrick had the only success for the Lions, while Markell and MacDonnell both beat Weir for the 3-2 win.

Thursday night, February 5, the Lions were in Casselman where they were handed an 8-2 blow by the division leading Casselman Vikings.

The Vikings led 4-0 after the first period, and 6-0 after two.

The Lions got on the scoreboard in the third period with a pair of goals from the stick of Michael Paquette at 6:07 and again at 6:15.

Jacob Guilliot assisted on both goals. Jordan Smail also helped out on the first and Landon Veenstra on the second.

Keiran Weir started for the Lions and was relieved by Brett Hahn.

The Lions are on the road to take on the Wolves this Saturday night, February 14 and at home against the Wolves on Sunday afternoon.

Neither will see playoff action this year.

Plans are falling into place for District 8 (Stormont, Dundas, Glengarry, Prescott-Russell and Akwesasne) to host the 55+ Eastern Regional games on August 20, in Cornwall and area. 

Games chair George Baker, said “preparations are nearing completion to host a total of 12 games comprising bid euchre, cribbage, contract bridge, darts, euchre, floor shuffleboard, golf, five-pin bowling, carpet bowling, tennis, pickleball and prediction walking.”

The Eastern Region of the Ontario Senior Games Association comprises seven districts stretching from the Québec border in the east to Kingston and Frontenac, and Renfrew in the west. Its northern and southern borders are the Ottawa and St. Lawrence rivers respectively.

Over 400 participants from the eastern region are registered for the games, said Baker. 

Additionally, 68 people are involved as convenors, non-participants, volunteers and officials. 

The most popular game is bowling, singles and team, whose participants number close to 100. Following bowling are golf with 45 players and floor shuffleboard with 41 players.

District 8 has the distinction of fielding three teams in men’s doubles tennis in the 75+ age category.

The day ends with a closing banquet in Cornwall’s Civic Centre. 

During the banquet, the participants will be entertained by a slide show of the day’s activities and by Glengarry’s Celtic musical group, the Brigadoons.

Summer Heights Golf Links–Golf 10:30 a.m.

Alexandria, Tim Horton’s Dome–Men’s Tennis 9:30 a.m.

We’re back at it. First some housekeeping notes. Our Tuesday night men’s league missed their final game in December because of the ice problems, with the result that as it stands, two teams remain tied for the Calvert Trophy. Congratulations to Larry Cooper, Barry Zeran, Len Bellamy and Bert Smail, and Robert Houze, Peter McCooeye, Ron Beaupre and Peter Byvelds. Our Friday night league did not declare a winner in their first draw.

Two teams of senior men entered the Parnell competition in Cornwall last Friday. Andy Patenaude, Neil Williams, Bud Perry and Keith Robinson, played well, but split their games. Pete Zeran, Jack Barkley, Karl Duncan and Earl Jeacle won both of their matches, but a Prescott team had a better point score and won this edition of the Parnell. Better luck next time, fellows.

Susan McIntosh hosted another two-person bonspiel on December 29, and reports that the “C” champions were Rick MacKenzie and Keith Robinson, the “B” winners were Earl Jeacle and Pete Zeran, while the “A” winners were Greta McGann and Linda Murphy. 

As usual, the lunch was great, and the happy warriors plan to be back at it soon. Thanks again to Susan and her committee for this. Money raised in these efforts is being dedicated to the purchase of a 60 inch TV set so that we can start hosting more parties –Olympics, Scotties, the Brier, hockey and the Super Bowl being some suggestions. It would bring in extra money for the club and perhaps generate some outside interest for people to come in and see what we have to offer.

Speaking of parties, how about the success of our annual New Year’s Eve party and bonspiel? In the curling portion of the evening, the winners of the New Year’s Trophy were Greta McGann, Dave McIntosh and Paula Locke. As to the party which followed, it was a happy event, the cash register was busy, and everyone made it home safely. Sounds like a great way to finish off the year.

President Mahlon Locke reports that the kitchen stovetop has been installed, a last bit of trim in the kitchen is being completed, and he expects that all renovations will be finished by next weekend at the latest.

We have several new curlers in various leagues, although a few snowbirds are headed south. Hope the weather is good down there!

There are playdowns for high school curlers on the 11th, and the regional playdowns for our zone are here on the 18th and 19th. Also, we host a bonspiel for senior men in January.
