Iroquois holds its Remembrance Day ceremony

It was cold, almost bitter, and the skies were grey in Iroquois on Sunday, November 4, as Iroquois held its Remembrance Day ceremony.

That did not stop people, all ages, from coming out to honour and remember the young men who laid down their lives for Canada in the great World Wars. Also remembered at the ceremony were the veterans of Korea, of many Canadian peace keeping missions and of Afghanistan.

The Iroquois Fire Department joined the Legion Colour Party and members of Branch #370 in the parade to the cenotaph, as did the scouts and many others.

During the services at the Legion and at the monument, the pipes and drums of the Kemptville Legion Branch #212 Pipe Band, directed by Pipe Major Mike Durant, played hymns and airs that would have been very familiar to the soldiers who served Canada’s colours. Everyone sang “O Canada” before the memorial.

Wreaths were presented on behalf of local organizations, businesses, churches, families and individuals. The young people of the community were also part of the service. MP Guy Lauzon laid a wreath on behalf of the federal government while MPP Jim McDonell placed one for the government of Ontario. Councillor Evonne Delegarde represented the Township of South Dundas. Two minutes of silence was observed.

Legion chaplain the Reverend Janet Evans led those present in prayer, finishing with the words, “We give You thanks for all who served their nation in time of trial, and for those who made the supreme sacrifice.”

Dare to Flash a ‘Stache will raise vital funds and awareness locally for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer.

Participants are invited to grow, groom, trim, wax or “fashion a fake” to make their way into the annals of fine moustachery from November 1st to Nov 30th.  

Before they get growing or styling, participants will have to register at www.flashastache.ca to start gathering pledges for themselves or their teams.  

At the SD&G Mutual Aid Fire Association Awards Banquet on August 20, dozens of local firefighters gathered to celebrate the recipients of four regional awards: attendance; fire prevention; fire training; and an all-around points award.  

Much to everyone’s surprise, a few regional leaders in the Mutual Aid donned moustaches to announce their support and to encourage participation among the rest of the attendees present and their fellow firefighters.

Asked about why firefighters might want to participate and support this event, Al Armstrong, Councilor, and Fire Commissioner for North Dundas  said, “Firefighters are without a doubt some of the most community-minded individuals.  There are thousands of dedicated volunteers working with service groups and other organizations, but firefighters are the only ones putting their lives on the line for their neighbours.” 

Armstrong added that, “it makes sense that prostate cancer would be a precious cause for firefighters, as the bulk of firefighters are male, and those who are female, likely have a spouse, brother, father, or friend that could benefit from increased awareness or fund raising efforts.”

It is important to know that funds raised will stay in this region.  A portion of the funds will support the WDMH Foundation Cancer Fund.  

The other half of the proceeds will be directed to critical research in connection with the Ottawa Hospital’s da Vinci robotics program (http://ohfoundation.ca/current-projects/patient-care/da-vinci-surgical-system). The Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation is the organization that is raising these funds.

South Dundas manager of public works Hugh Garlough submitted the department’s monthly activity summary for the March 20th South Dundas council meeting.

In the summary, he reported that “Robinson Consultants have been asked to give us a life expectancy for both landfills.” 

The current South Dundas landfill sites are the Church Road Landfill and the Matilda Landfill.

During the March 5th budget meeting, Garlough introduced the landfill life expectancy into the discussion. It was suggested that a new garbage policy may be necessary depending upon the “life” left in each of the landfills.

On March 27th, Garlough reported that Robinson Consultants Inc. are currently “completing the 2011 year-end report. In that report, we will get a projected life expectancy for each of the two landfills.”

“The residents will be affected as we will have to transport our household and any other garbage to an approved landfill site, as well as a tipping fee.”

“The planning will begin when we know for sure what our life expectancy numbers are,” continued Garlough. “Options we have already considered are having our household garbage contractor dispose of the garbage as part of the contract.”

“More options will be considered as we get closer to the end of landfill site life,” he added.

Chief administrative officer Stephen McDonald reported that another possible solution to a short landfill life expectancy is a “100,000 cubic meter expansion in Matilda.”

He said, “we don’t have any other sites once those are filled to capacity.” In that case, McDonald pointed out that the township would have to look outside South Dundas for disposal options.

Once the Robinson report is in, McDonald said the township will have “a better handle on where we need to go in terms of restrictions.” Until then the garbage policy remains the same.
