Junior C Lions add 2 strokes to win collumn

It was a good week for the Morrisburg Junior C Lions as they put two marks in the win column of the National Capital Hockey League’s South Division standings.

Last Wednesday, November 4, the Lions were in Chesterville, where they picked up their first win of the season against the North Dundas Rockets, 6-4. That was followed by a crushing 7-1 loss to Vankleek Hill on Saturday, and an exciting 2-1 overtime win against the Rockets in Morrisburg, on Sunday.

Last Wednesday in Chesterville, the Lions found themselves down a goal after the first period. Jordan Leigh had  connected twice for the Rockets, with Devon Burns (from Dillon Lapier) responding late in the first period to cut the gap to 2-1.

The Rockets doubled their advantage in the second period with goals from Josh Hansen and Will Fawcett, while again the Lions managed just one, this time from the stick of Jordan Smail assisted by Spencer Discheau and Sam Frawley.

But then along came the third period, and with it three unanswered Lions goals for a 5-4 lead, before Eric Evans polished it off with a empty netter for the 6-4 victory.

Justin Rousseau, from Curtis Evans, got it started early in the third period, and at 11:05 Devon Burns connected (unassisted) to tie the game 4-4.

Discheau planted what would be the winner with the help of Frawley and Brodey Casselman at 15:54.

Keiran Weir was in net for the Lions.

Saturday night, November 7 in Morrisburg, the Lions were overpowered by the visiting Vankleek Hill Cougars who led 2-1 after the first period, and 5-1 heading into the third.

Blake Battistoni connected for the lone Lions goal with help from Devon Burns and Mikael Dobson.

The Cougars scored five times against Lions goaltender Eric Mantha and added two more against Kieran Weir who saw 20 minutes of action.

Patrick Landry led the attack with two goals and singles were scored by Jeremy Daponte, Frederic Leger, Kristian Palmer, Riley Sauve and Lee Sequin.

Sunday’s match was an exciting one from start to finish with the Rockets going up 1-0 early in the first period on a Jordan Leigh goal assisted by Josh Hansen and Brady Tanner.

That one goal was closely guarded by the Rockets and their goaltender Emil Lamontagne until just over one minute into the third period when Spencer Discheau struck to tie it 1-1 with help from Brodey Casselman.

From then on Lions goaltender Keiran Weir and Lamontagne did the talking to keep the game tied at 1-1 and force the overtime.

It was Devon Burns who would finally find an opening (with help from Eric Evans) for the 2-1 Lions win.

This Friday night, the Lions are on the road to take on the South Division’s first place Embrun Panthers.

Saturday night, November 14 they will host the north division’s Gatineau Hull-Volant. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
