SOUTH DUNDAS – Although the details have not been completely finalized, South Dundas council has formalized its intention to accept the download of County Road 4 (Lakeshore Drive) and County Road 1 (Carman Road South) from the United Counties of SDG.
SDG chief administrative officer Tim Simpson sent an email to South Dundas council to formally confirm the transfer by July 1, 2017, and council did just that at the June 20th meeting.
“These two projects were prioritized by the County during the 2017 budget deliberations on the premise that once repaired, they would be in an acceptable state to facilitate jurisdictional transfer to South Dundas,” wrote Simpson in the letter.
He asked for the formal confirmation to ensure that counties council is aware of South Dundas’ intentions before any major work commences.
“It’s a big move,” said South Dundas deputy mayor Jim Locke, who is a Counties councillor who has long been advocating for this download.
Locke said the download will open up more opportunity for residential development because the municipality does not limit entrance ways like the Counties do.
“Residential development is a positive for us as a municipality,” said South Dundas mayor Evonne Delegade.
South Dundas councillor Marc St. Pierre did express some concern over the download and about the pressure put on council to confirm its intentions by July 1st.
“This is an opportunity to get this work done,” said South Dundas councillor Archie Mellan. “These are tourist areas with much potential.”
