Ray Smollett of Iroquois, passed away suddenly at the Brockville General Hospital on Monday November 14, 2016. He was 94.
Beloved husband of the late Marian Smollett (nee O’Meara), Ray was loving father of Gail Flinn (David), Gwen McGill (late Rod), Joyce Bartholomew (Wayne), all of Iroquois, Brenda Millward (Ian) of Morrisburg and Helen Hawley (Doug) of Kingston.
Ray will be sadly missed by his grandchildren Sarah McGill (Nick), Kristy McGill, Nicholas McGill (Lesley), Kelly Redden (Sean), Josh Bartholomew (Ashley), Melissa Flinn, Ty and Reagan Hawley and his great-grandchildren Shayna, Sawyer, Gavin, Abby, Madeline, Katherine, Liam and Quinton.
Ray was dear brother of Phil of Campbellton, NB.
He was predeceased by his brothers Lloyd and Jerry. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Ray was born in New Carlisle, Quebec, March 30, 1922, to his parents Dewey & Hilda (nee Ray) Smollett.
Ray left New Carlisle at the age of 19 to begin a 40 plus year career with CN railways.
June 20th, 1953, he married Marian O’Meara and together they had five girls.
His career took Ray to several towns and locations in Eastern Ontario before he settled in the village of Iroquois in 1960.
Ray was a long-time member of Knox Presbyterian Church and served on numerous committees and was recently recognized for his 50 years as a church elder.
He will be remembered by the congregation as door greeter and bell ringer.
He loved to visit with the members and shut-ins of the church.
He was also an active Ham Radio Operator (VE3 CIF) and in December of 2015 he received the first ever Amateur Radio Club Lifetime Membership award.
Through is work with the club he directed traffic for many years at the Canada Day celebrations at the Iroquois Point.
Ray enjoyed fishing and the company of his friends.
He never liked to miss a meal at the Iroquois Legion on Fridays, or for that matter any meal.
He talked to everyone he met whether he knew them or not.
He maintained his wit, independence and sense of humour until the end.
Friends called at the Marsden McLaughlin Funeral Home, Iroquois, on Thursday, November 17th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Funeral service was held at Knox Presbyterian Church in Iroquois on Friday, November 18th at 11 a.m., with Reverend Geoff Howard officiating.
In honour of his Scottish heritage Ray was piped in and out of the church.
Honorary pallbearers were Marlene Shearer and Bill Barnhartd.
Pallbearers were Sarah, Kristy & Nicholas McGill, Melissa Flinn, Ty Hawley and Sean Redden. Interment was at Knox Cemetery, followed by a luncheon in the church hall. Donations were made to Knox Presbyterian Church.
