Midget B1 House eliminate Leeds Chargers

The South Dundas Midget B1 House Lions put together a huge four point series win for an upset against the Leeds 2 Chargers in Uppcr Canada Minor Hockey league playoff action last week.

The Lions finished the regular season in the East Division’s fourth place, to meet the third place Chargers, against whom they hadn’t produced a win all year.

The Chargers swept the four regular season games, but with the exception of a 6-2 win, the games were very close with the Chargers squeezing out  3-2, 2-1 and 3-2 wins.

That pointed to a close playoff series with the Chargers slightly favoured…but the Lions were up for the challenge.

The Lions got it started in Westport, last Monday night, February 15, with a 5-2 victory and polished off the four-point series, Thursday night, in Morrisburg, with a 4-2 win.

Monday night in Westport, the Chargers carried a 1-0 advantage, on a Clay Blanchard goal, into the second period.

It was early in the second, that Tyler Nelson got started on a three goal performance with help from Matt Backes.

The 1-1 tie held until 1:23 of the third when Blanchard counted his second goal to put the Chargers up 2-1.

Eleven seconds later, the Lions took charge with three quick goals at 1:34 (from Drew Minish), and 2:21 and 4:03, (both from Nelson for a three goal performance).

Noah Picotte (from Kody Arsenault) collected the Lions fifth counter, giving the Lions the 5-2 win and the first two points of the series.

Thursday night in Morrisburg, the Lions were quick out of the starting gate.

They went up 2-0 in the first period on goals by Drew Minish (from Arsenault and Jaxon Weegar) and Tyler Nelson (from Picotte).

Early in to the second period Picotte, with help from Tyler Nelson and Mackenzie Nelson, stretched their advantage to 3-0.

But it wasn’t over yet, and Leeds came charging back with goals from Brady Ballentyne and Josh Fenlong to cut the gap to 3-2.

Lions goaltender Christian Francis got in the way of any further Chargers goals and the 3-2 score held until midway into the third period when Nelson, with Matt Backes providing the assist, counted to make it 4-2.

The 4-2 win gave the Lions the series, four points to zero and they will now advance to the UCMHL Midget B House’s East Division second round.

In other Midget B House action, the South Dundas Midget B 2 team lost their opening playoff series in the West Division to the Kemptville 1s.

The Lions lost 4-0 in Kemptville on Sunday, February 14, and were eliminated in Morrisburg, Friday February 19 by a 7-4 Kemptville victory.
