Mary Salmon

 

A resident of the Hartford Retirement Residence in Morrisburg, for the past year, Mary Salmon entered into rest on Friday, January 8, 2016, at Winchester District Memorial Hospital.  She was 83.

Mary was born in Prescott, on September 15, 1932. She is predeceased by her mother Eileen Henry and her father Stuart Sterrett, both from Prescott.  Mary went to school in Prescott   and played trumpet in the Prescott High School Band.

On December 5, 1953, at the United Church Manse in Prescott she married Willis Salmon and together they had two daughters, Sandra and Cathy.

After her marriage Mary moved to Morrisburg, to raise her family. She was a stay at home mom. 

She became a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Morrisburg, and was a member of the congregation until her death.

Mary had many positions in her church. She was a member of the  ELW of St. Paul’s and was the chair for a number of years. She was on the altar committee, she belonged to the St. Paul’s Ladies Quilting group, and she helped with communion and the after service coffee and snacks hour. 

Mary was in her element when she had to put on a luncheon or a potluck. She could delegate and continued to do so until her health became a factor. She loved working with the ladies of St. Paul’s and loved her church community. Even in failing health, Mary was in the congregation during the final service of St. Paul’s in Morrisburg.

Mary loved her children and being a stay at home mom.  Her children remember the hours she would spend helping them with homework and helping her older daughter decipher Shakespeare. She loved playing cards or board games with them and loved being out back watching them play with the neighbourhood children. She loved her crossword books. Many hours were spent doing crossword puzzles. She loved to crochet and quilt.

Mary was a cancer survivor. She lost one kidney to cancer, but was lucky enough not to have to undergo chemotherapy or radiation. She also had cataracts which were dealt with and in later life

Mary was diagnosed with moderate dementia, and it was at this time that she entered The Hartford. She was a fighter to the end and knew her children until her final days.

Mary is survived by her daughters Sandra Salmon (Joe Deschamps) of Prescott and Cathy Salmon of Cornwall.  She was predeceased by her husband Willis Jay Salmon.  

She is also survived by nieces and nephews and by a cousin Debbie Greer (Ross).

Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Williamsburg, on Sunday from 2-4 p.m. Funeral Service was held at the South Dundas Lutheran Community Church, Williamsburg, on Monday, January 11th at 11 a.m., with Pastor Diane Raddatz officiating and Pastor Jo Barkley Probst reading lessons. A luncheon followed.  

Cremated remains will be interred at a later date at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.  

Pallbearers were Raymond Guindon, Joseph F. Deschamps, Brian Howald, Dr. Graham Houze, Richard Casselman and Ross Greer. Honorary pallbearer was Percy Salmon.
